A way that we can prevent anymore of these toxic spills is to check, and make sure that all of the mines are safe and are not at risk to spilling. This helps because if you have a faulty dam and if a toxic spill were to happen nearby, the dam would filter it out, and not let it pass through the dam. If there was a toxic spill and the contents were to seep into a river that is protected by a dam, and if that dam is faulty, the toxic waste could seep through and intoxicate potential freshwater drinking reservoirs. Another thing that would help a lot is that if you were to build mines were some of the contents of the area are highly toxic. This would help because in the unlikely event of a leakage or a spill, the contents of the spill would not be toxic, so if the contents were to run into a major river, it would not pollute it.  The final thing is that we should not be building dams right next to major waterways and drinking reservoirs. This would help a little because if there was a spill it would not flow into the river, it would just go all over the land in front of it, but the problem with that if the water flowed onto the ground around the area it could harm surrounding animals and their habitats.
